Tech, Teamwork, and Fun: Inside the DataAllianceLimburg Hackathon
From June 14th to 16th, Heerlen was full of excitement and creativity. DataAllianceLimburg, by BronzGreen and COMPUTD, organized a hackathon for Limburg students.
During the three days, they tackled real challenges and had fun. The event focused on coding, teamwork, learning, and enjoyment. It was a weekend of innovation and collaboration, where everyone learned new skills and created lasting memories.
Three teams with 4 to 5 students each worked together to solve problems and come up with new ideas. They showed their skills and creativity by facing real challenges.
The participants came from different countries and had different viewpoints. They were all students studying Data & AI, who loved technology and wanted to create positive change. These students were from the likes of Spain, Germany, the Netherlands or Croatia, showcasing the rich and diverse talent pool present in the Limburg region.
The Cases

The hackathon included three real-world challenges from our partners Precedence, Stichting Kwecoo, and 4PLUS Bouwmaterialen. These challenges aimed to test participants’ creativity, technical skills, and problem-solving abilities by simulating industry problems.
By presenting real-world cases, DataAllianceLimburg created an environment where innovation and practical skills could address business challenges. Participants had to tackle complex issues, create innovative solutions, and showcase their technical expertise.
Challenge 1: Improving the supply chain operations for 4PLUS Bouwmaterialen.
Teams found solutions to make operations smoother and reduce damages. They focused on logistics, inventory management, and data analysis. Ideas included better tracking systems and predictive maintenance tools to make the supply chain more efficient and cost-effective.
Challenge 2: Helping the voice-less up with Stichting Kwecoo.
Teams worked on creating mobile apps or community platforms to give a voice to those who are often unheard. They considered accessibility, user engagement, and sensitivity to make a real impact.
Challenge 3: Enhancing the work experience at Precedence.
Teams brainstormed ideas to boost employee engagement and satisfaction, making the workplace more enjoyable and productive. They thought about workplace culture, employee well-being, and tools for productivity.
Participants tackled these challenges with technical skills, creativity, and understanding, providing innovative and practical solutions. Each challenge allowed teams to showcase their strengths and learn new skills, making the hackathon a valuable experience for all.
Projects were evaluated based on several criteria, including innovation and originality, technical feasibility, user engagement, impact on user experience, and cost-effectiveness. This comprehensive evaluation ensured that the best solutions were recognized and rewarded.
Fun and Social Activities
The hackathon was not just about intense coding and problem-solving. It also featured several fun activities that allowed participants to unwind and bond. A delightful pizza party provided an opportunity for networking and enjoying delicious food. The invigorating ice bathing session tested participants’ resilience, while the relaxed barbecue fostered camaraderie. Participants also enjoyed watching EURO2024 on a big screen, and evenings were spent sharing stories and experiences around a cozy fireplace. These activities balanced the intense work sessions with moments of relaxation and fun, enhancing the overall experience.
The hackathon had a tremendously positive impact on both the participants and the broader community. Participants felt well-treated and appreciated the inclusive and supportive environment. The event significantly contributed to fostering the tech community in Limburg by bringing together bright minds to collaborate and innovate.
DataAllianceLimburg is committed to continuing this tradition of fostering innovation and community building. We look forward to hosting more events that bring together talented individuals to solve real-world problems and drive technological advancements.
